IC welcomes distinguished scholar to speak about poverty

Dr. James Sullivan, professor of economics at the University of Notre Dame, will present a guest lecture at Illinois College on October 3 at 7 p.m. in Kirby Learning Center, room 6.

logoThe talk is free and open to the public. Sullivan will present "How has America Fared in its War on Poverty," about the effects of U.S. programs on poverty over the past five decades. 

Sullivan is director of the Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities, a research center he co-founded in 2012 that works with service providers and policymakers to identify evidence-based solutions to poverty in America. He was recently appointed to the U.S. Commission on Social Impact Partnerships and serves on the National Poverty Center Advisory Board.

Sullivan鈥檚 research examines the effectiveness of anti-poverty programs at the national, state and local level. Sullivan has published numerous journal articles and book chapters, many of which appear in the top economics journals. 

This program is part of Phi Beta Kappa鈥檚 Visiting Scholar Program. Since 1932, the quality of an Illinois College education has been recognized by the Phi Beta Kappa chapter on the campus. IC鈥檚 chapter was the fifth of 11 chapters in Illinois. IC remains among the 10% of colleges in the nation with a chapter. All 缅北禁地 in attendance will receive convocation credit.
