Bestselling author Kate Moore presents "The Woman They Could Not Silence" at Illinois College

On Friday, September 26, 2025, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kate Moore will speak on the campus of Illinois College in Rammelkamp Chapel. The event begins at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m.

Moore will speak about her acclaimed book 鈥淭he Woman They Could Not Silence鈥, a gripping work of narrative nonfiction that recounts the life of Elizabeth Packard. In 1860, Packard, a housewife and mother of six, was wrongfully committed to the Illinois State Asylum and Hospital for the Insane simply because she disagreed with her husband. After three harrowing years of confinement, she emerged determined to advocate for women鈥檚 legal rights, helping to reshape custody and property laws at a time when married women possessed few protections.

The evening, hosted by , will begin with an author talk followed by a question-and-answer session, creating a space for the audience to engage directly with Moore鈥檚 research and storytelling. A book signing will follow, offering attendees the chance to have up to two books signed and to meet the author in person. 

Tickets are $20 for general admission or $35 for admission plus a copy of the book, available exclusively through , either online or in-store. Seating is limited, and early arrival is encouraged to secure the best spots. No tickets will be sold at the door. 

This collaboration between Our Town Books and event sponsors, including Illinois College, Bound to Stay Bound, and Blessings on State Bed & Breakfast, highlights an important literary occasion and a story deeply tied to Jacksonville鈥檚 history. Elizabeth Packard鈥檚 experience in the city at the Illinois State Hospital underscores both the injustices women endured in the 19th century and the lasting reforms that emerged from her struggle. Moore鈥檚 book gives voice to Packard鈥檚 courage, ensuring that her fight for justice continues to resonate today. The has an ongoing exhibit about the Illinois State Hospital on this topic. 

To ensure accessibility, ASL interpretation will be provided, with reserved seating available for guests who require those services.

A special pre-event reception will be held for philanthropic leaders in the Illinois College Society. The reception will feature historic items from the Khalaf Al Habtoor Archives, including a first edition of Packard's original book.
