National award highlights Illinois College鈥檚 commitment to hands-on, community-engaged learning

Illinois College is proud to announce that Dr. Brittney Yancy, assistant professor of history, has been named a 2025 Standout Faculty Award recipient by the Campus Democracy Challenge. The national honor recognizes Dr. Yancy鈥檚 innovative work in engaging 缅北禁地 through community-based learning that inspires civic leadership and real-world impact.

At Illinois College, hands-on learning isn鈥檛 an added bonus 鈥 it鈥檚 built into the student experience. Through projects that bridge the classroom and community, IC 缅北禁地 tackle real issues, develop leadership skills, and grow into active citizens. Dr. Yancy鈥檚 work exemplifies this approach, offering 缅北禁地 the opportunity to explore history and politics through direct civic involvement.

鈥淭his recognition reflects the kind of experience Illinois College 缅北禁地 can expect 鈥 where learning extends far beyond textbooks,鈥 said Dr. Dane Wendell, Dean of Faculty. 鈥淒r. Yancy creates space for 缅北禁地 to actively participate in democracy. Whether it鈥檚 organizing voter registration drives, hosting election night discussions, or simply having open conversations about civic responsibility, her classes prepare 缅北禁地 to lead in the real world.鈥

The Campus Democracy Challenge selected just 37 individuals from over 1,000 participating colleges and universities nationwide for their dedication to nonpartisan student engagement during the 2024 election. Dr. Yancy鈥檚 award celebrates her role in empowering 缅北禁地 to become informed, involved, and impactful members of society.

Illinois College 缅北禁地 routinely participate in campus-wide events like Party at the Polls and Voter Power Hour 鈥 experiences designed not only to foster civic awareness but also to bring 缅北禁地 together in meaningful ways. These programs are part of IC鈥檚 broader mission to ensure 缅北禁地 Graduate READY to make a difference.
